Sounds off to me but I like to think of 2 kinds of timelines. 1. Where Nintendo made Sonic and Sega made Mario. 2. SEGA made a fantastic Sonic 3D game that would spearhead the future of 3D gaming, while Nintendo's Mario would be the one who would have problems to find it's footing in the 3D gaming landspace over the generations.
